Quantum Savvy Group Organizer Interview- Sep 2007
Rhonda CollinsGroup - Sundowners PG
Area: Tamborine Qld Australia
Group Formed: May 2007
Level: I am currently working on Level 1. My immediate goal is to complete Level 1 by the end of this year.
Horse: Stormy Knight “Stormy” a Tbred/Warmblood and Navaho my wonderful old paint.
Quantum Savvy Student for: since August 2006
Horsie Background:I never had much to do with horses during my child- hood. My introduction to horses came when my husband bought me a horse in about 1993; since then I have been hooked. I loved this mare, but at the same time was petrified when I rode. Unfortunately we didn’t have her all that long and we had to have her put down due to a previous unknown injury. It broke my heart, I was so green and she was so knowledgeable. I often think of her, and wish I could just show her how much I know now, and how much she taught me about the love an animal can give you. I also joined an Adult Riding Club where we did pub rides, games days, and rides through country Victoria.
Why you started with Quantum Savvy:I have always hated to see traditional teaching techniques and seeing people breaking the spirit of a horse and calling it “breaking them in”. I was interested in
natural horsemanship, heard about a “free lesson week of QS Instructor Training” thought..great idea! Came for the week, enjoyed it immensely and fell in love with the QS way, and decided this was for me.
Goals:To ride Stormy, bareback and bridle- less in the moonlight. That’s Stormy being bareback and bridle-less not me!!(not a pretty sight!!) and to prove that it can be done with kindness and communication, not with harsh tools.
Claim to fame:Our very first play day I took Stormy under a flapping tarp tied to tree branches. The wind was blowing a gale and the tarp was hitting him in the face as we couldn’t get it any higher in the trees. More recently, getting Stormy calmly in and out of the float without him dragging me half way round a 10 acre paddock. And “watch this space” because my future claim to fame will be riding him bareback and bridleless……..
What drives you?If I really set my mind on something, I will achieve it..... eventually. Also my love of animals in particular dogs and horses and the desire to dismiss the old saying “you have to be cruel to be kind”. Thanks Shane and Meredith, for opening a whole new world up for me.
Anything else you’d like to add:I’ve always loved horses but also been scared of them. QS has taught me to appreciate and understand them and their mindset so much more and to challenge myself regularly. This has improved my confidence and ability. To anyone out there who is wondering whether QS is for them, I would say, “give it a go, it has been the best thing I have ever done in my life”. Thanks Shane and Meredith, for opening a whole new world up for me.
